Faculty Mentors

Guiding fellows throughout the fellowship

Every E3 Fellow is paired with an experienced faculty mentor who guides them through the full nine months — from course planning to the culminating scholarly teaching contribution.

Individualized guidance, all year long

Mentors meet biweekly with their fellow in preparation for and through the semester — discussing teaching challenges, classroom observations, professional growth, and career development — followed by monthly check-ins.

They also provide feedback on fellows’ instructional innovations and scholarly teaching projects, fostering reflective practice and continuous improvement. At the end of the year, mentors join the Department or Unit Chair in a final structured evaluation of the fellow’s overall growth and readiness as an engineering educator.

What mentorship covers

  • Course planning and syllabus design
  • Classroom observation and instructional feedback
  • Assessment strategy and student engagement
  • Professional growth and career development
  • Instructional innovation and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project guidance
  • Final evaluation of the fellow’s development, in collaboration with the Department or Unit Chair

How the mentoring year runs

Before the semester

Biweekly meetings begin ahead of Fall 2026, focused on course planning and preparation for the first teaching appointment.

Through the semester

Biweekly meetings continue alongside classroom observation and formative feedback on instruction, assessment, and engagement.

Into the spring

Monthly check-ins support fellows as they take on their two-course spring teaching load and implement and evaluate their instructional innovation.

Support for mentors

You don’t have to build the mentoring process from scratch. E³ provides a dedicated Mentor & Program Toolkit with practical resources to help structure meetings, guide conversations, document progress, and support fellows throughout the nine-month fellowship.

The toolkit includes:

  • A structured mentoring framework with guidance for organizing and conducting mentoring meetings
  • Meeting plans and conversation guides to support mentors throughout the fellowship
  • Practical worksheets and forms for mentoring meetings, classroom observations, instructional innovation, and fellow growth
  • A classroom observation protocol to help mentors provide meaningful formative feedback
  • An instructional innovation and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) planner to support fellows’ teaching projects
  • A mentor question bank with prompts to help guide conversations and reflection
  • Curated teaching, mentoring, and research resources to support fellows’ professional development
