E³ Fellows Program

Preparing the next generation of engineering educators

The Engineering Education & Excellence (E³) Fellows Program prepares recent Ph.D. recipients, postdoctoral scholars, and early-career faculty for careers as engineering educators. Through teaching, mentorship, professional development, and scholarly teaching, fellows develop the skills and experience to become effective engineering faculty. During the fellowship, participants serve as Visiting Instructional Assistant Professors.

Why E³ Fellows?

Bridging Research and Teaching

Becoming an effective engineering educator requires more than expertise in engineering or research. It requires opportunities to develop as a teacher, learn from experienced educators, and connect teaching practice with evidence and scholarship.

The E³ Fellows Program creates that bridge. Fellows gain meaningful classroom experience, work closely with faculty mentors, and explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning as they prepare for careers as engineering faculty.

Fellows Journey

The nine-month E³ Fellows experience moves from teaching and professional development to instructional innovation, evaluation, and scholarly sharing.

Begin and Develop → Explore & Innovate → Impliment & Evaluate → Share & Reflect

Begin & Develop (Fall)

Fellows begin teaching their first course, establish a relationship with a faculty mentor, participate in professional development through UF’s Center for Teaching Excellence, and observe exemplary engineering courses. They also participate in monthly E³ workshops designed to support their teaching and professional development.

Explore & Innovate (Fall)

Drawing on their teaching experience, observations, professional development, and mentorship, fellows identify an area of teaching and learning to explore and develop an instructional innovation for the spring.

Implement & Evaluate (Spring)

Fellows teach two courses while implementing and evaluating their instructional innovation in one of their courses. They gather evidence and reflect on its impact on teaching and learning.

Share & Reflect (Spring)

Fellows present their scholarly teaching contributions at the CTE Interface Conference and reflect on their development as educators and future faculty members.

Fellows Experience

The E³ Fellows Program integrates five experiences that connect classroom practice with mentorship, professional development, workshops, and scholarly teaching.

Supervised TeachingFellows gain hands-on experience teaching engineering courses while receiving formative guidance and feedback on course planning, instruction, assessment, and student engagement.

As part of the program, fellows teach three courses across two semesters: one course in the fall and two courses in the spring.
Faculty MentorshipEach fellow is paired with an experienced faculty mentor who provides individualized guidance throughout the nine-month program.

Mentors support fellows through course planning, classroom observation, instructional feedback, professional growth, and development of their instructional innovation and scholarly teaching.
Professional DevelopmentFellows participate in structured professional development through UF’s Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE).

Through this experience, fellows develop skills in evidence-based teaching, student learning, instructional strategies, assessment, and inclusive educational practices.
Monthly E³ WorkshopsThroughout the fellowship, fellows participate in monthly workshops hosted by the Department of Engineering Education.

The sessions provide practical guidance and resources related to teaching, educational technology, computing, educational research, and other aspects of academic practice.
Scholarly Teaching & SoTLFellows develop an instructional innovation, implement it in their teaching, and use evidence to examine its impact on teaching and learning.

Through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), fellows develop a scholarly approach to their teaching practice and present their scholarly teaching contribution at the CTE Interface Conference.
