Biography

Dr. Smith is a Visiting Assistant Instructional Professor with the Department of Engineering Education. She instructs designated courses in the Engineering Innovation Institute, primarily focused on Engineering Innovation for students in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. She works with students to build creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship across the campus and community, while collaborating with faculty mentors and instructional leaders to develop effective teaching practices, incorporate evidence-based instructional methods, and continuously improve course delivery.

Dr. Smith received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Biological Sciences from Mississippi State University. After her undergraduate studies, she completed her Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Florida. She earned her doctorate in Engineering Education, with a disciplinary focus in Biomedical Engineering, from the University of Florida as well. During her time as a graduate student at UF, Dr. Smith helped co-found the Effective Mentoring Strategies (EMS) Workshop, which provided STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) graduate students and postdoctoral scholars with professional development training related to self- and cultural-awareness, communication best practices, and social capital in STEMM research mentoring relationships. Through this training experience, attendees were exposed to new knowledge and practices that would help them to thrive in research mentoring relationships in academia and industry.
