About this program
The Master of Science in Engineering Education equips graduate students with a core knowledge of educational research and evidence-based teaching practices in an engineering context to broaden the experiences of engineers beyond their disciplinary-specific skills.The program can be completed with a non-thesis or thesis option.
Admission Requirements
One of the following:
- B.S. in STEM-related field
- B.S. and related experience in STEM
- Bachelor’s degree and experience as a teacher of a STEM topic
GPA: 3.0 (Graduate school) No GRE required TOEFL (if applicable)
Core Courses
MS without Thesis
- EGS 6050: Foundations in Engineering Education (3 credits)
- EGS 6054: Cognition, Learning, and Pedagogy in Engineering Education (3 credits)
- EGS 6051: Instructional Design in Engineering Education (3 credits)
MS with Thesis
Six additional core course credits:
- EGS 6020: Research Design in Engineering Education (3 credits)
- EGS 6012: Research Methods in Engineering Education (3 credits)
Electives
MS without Thesis
- 21 credits – Engineering Education-related courses. Approved by the graduate coordinator
MS with Thesis
- 9 credits – Graduate Courses related to research topic/career goal
Required for Graduation
MS without Thesis
Comprehensive Examination. No credits. Examples:
- Teaching a class period
- Writing a position paper on a policy issue
- Writing a literature review, etc.

Six credits:
- EGS 6971 – Research for Master’s Thesis (written document and oral defense)
